In this cinematic rendition of Robinne Lee’s novel, a recent divorcee finds herself entangled in a romance with an international pop sensation, portrayed by an Oscar-winning actor.

“The Idea of You,” directed by Michael Showalter of “The Big Sick” fame

“The Idea of You,” directed by Michael Showalter of “The Big Sick” fame, commences with a classic romantic trope: a whimsical encounter that charms from the outset.

Our protagonist, Solene (played by the delightful Anne Hathaway), stumbles into a chance meeting with Hayes Campbell (portrayed by Nicholas Galitzine), the frontman of the famed band August Moon, in what she mistakenly believes to be a restroom trailer at Coachella. Despite her reluctance to be amidst the neon-clad festival-goers, Solene’s plans for solitude are thwarted by circumstances, leading her to cross paths with Hayes.

Thus begins an improbable love story, adapted from Lee’s novel, reminiscent of the romantic escapades seen in films like “Notting Hill.” Solene and Hayes embark on a whirlwind romance that alters the course of the Silver Lake mother’s life and briefly affects her relationship with her daughter, Izzy. As Solene accompanies Hayes on his European tour, she grapples with her attraction to a man nearly two decades her junior and contends with the backlash from his fervent fanbase online. Amidst this turmoil, Solene confronts questions about her own happiness and the shape she wants her life to take after turning 40.

Hathaway’s portrayal of Solene imbues the film with much of its charm, as she navigates the complexities of balancing her established life with the allure of a new romance. The initial stages of Solene and Hayes’ relationship, characterized by visits to her art gallery and intimate lunches, are depicted with a richness that breathes life into their connection. Galitzine’s portrayal of the pop star adds depth to the character, particularly through his musical performances, which were crafted by Savan Kotecha.

However, as the film progresses, its focus on Solene and Hayes’ romance detracts from the exploration of their individual identities. Despite moments of tenderness between the leads, their interactions become repetitive, centering largely on the uncertainty of their relationship.

While “The Idea of You” primarily functions as a lighthearted romantic comedy, it also offers glimpses into themes of self-discovery, making it a delightful cinematic treat with a touch of introspection.
